Virtual Musical Instruments

The virtual musical instrument is an interface that allows users to simulate a musical instrument by printing a template on a sheet of paper, placing it in view of the webcam of their laptop, and running the console application. The user then ’plays’ the virtual instrument as if it were a real one, and appropriate music is generated. This is achieved by calibration of the template, detecting the marker position, identifying the hit position and playing notes corresponding to that position. We demonstrate this process for three different ’virtual instruments’ and also report the accuracy of estimating the hit position.
